Photos from Korea

November 2002

Above: Signing at Kyobo, Seoul's biggest bookstore.

At right: Every aisle looks like this!

Q & A with students at Osan Elementary in Seoul...

...after an introduction by their principal. (At left, KBS-TV records my every move.)

Outside the Blue House--Korea's White House--after meeting First Lady
Mrs. Lee Hee-Ho. From left, the editor of WomanSense magazine (like Redbook
or McCall's, who is writing an article on the meeting); me; my interpreter Michelle
Kim; and Sanghee Lee, the editor of the Korean edition of A Single Shard.

At the DMZ--the demilitarized zone between
North and South Korea. This photo was taken
from a window in the conference room. The work-
men, supervised by a U.S. soldier, are repairing the
border--a seventeen-inch-wide concrete strip.
The one-hole golf course at the DMZ. At the bottom, the
lettering cautions golfers not to retrieve balls from the rough
due to live mine fields.

A Buddhist temple in the Kyungju region (southeast Korea). The
building is the entrance to a grotto which contains a giant granite
statue of Buddha. Dating from the 9th century, it is beautifully
preserved.

Adding a stone to the 'wish pile' outside the
temple.
