October 2005

Lots of news in this update:

NEW BOOK!

My new picture book, BEE-BIM BOP! is just out from Clarion Books. I'm thrilled with the illustrations by Ho Baek Lee (who also wrote and illustrated the delightful picture book WHILE WE WERE OUT).

ON TOUR: In October I will be touring on the West Coast. I'd love to meet some of my website visitors in person! Click here to see dates and places.

PROJECT MULBERRY has been awarded the 2005 Chicago Tribune Prize for Young Adult fiction! An honor from my old home town--what could be better!? I will be accepting the award at the end of October; for more details, see my tour schedule.

On September 24 I participated in the National Book Festival in Washington DC. This annual event hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, draws thousands of people to the Mall for presentations and book signings by 75-plus authors. I was also honored to be one of the speakers at the black-tie Gala the night before the festival.

Here's a photo of me at the Festival:

To read more about the weekend, see my blog entry for September 26.

The Festival is held in late September every year. If you're near Washington DC at that time of year, make it a point to go--it's a terrific day out for the whole family.

Over Labor Day Weekend, I was in Hawaii for the Maui Writers Conference. It was a wonderful weekend; I got to hear presentations by mystery writer Elizabeth George, fantasy author Terry Brooks, and several others. I also got to speak at the Young Writers event, where 53 high-school seniors from Hawaii and California were honored for their work.

With my editor Dinah Stevenson in Lahaina on Maui.

I haven't been able to post in my reading blog as often as I'd like, but I do get there every once in a while. Check it out here.

Hope everyone is enjoying being back at school. Keep reading!  --LSP
